Historic Lingayen Beach

Lingayen Beach (Gulf) played a crucial part in Philippines history. Situated on the northwest coast of Luzon, it suffered two invasions during World War II: the first, in 1941, was by the Japanese; the second, three years later, by the returning American forces. Lingayen Gulf was taken over by the American troops on the 9th of January 1945. This beach was occupied by the Allied forces of US and Filipino soldiers and has become one of the supply depot during the Pacific War.

Lingayen Beach boasts not of white sand or colorful seashells but rather fine grey sand, the shore is a long stretch of more than 2 kilometers  where anyone can relax and enjoy under the sun.

Vintage war memorabilia used during World War 2 are also on display on the Veteran's Memorial Park located beside the Lingayen beach which includes: tank, war plane and an anti air craft gun.

How to Get There:

1.) Take a bus bound to Alaminos/Bolinao (FiveStar), they have terminals in Cubao and Pasay.

2.) Tell the conductor to drop you off in Lingayen Capitol.

Revisiting the Past through the National Museum

The Philippines which is composed of more than 7,100 islands has a rich and colorful history which reminds every Filipino of the countries' glorious past. Consisting of more than a hundred local dialects and tribes, each geographical ethnicity has their own stories to tell. 

The first known civilization predates back before the Spanish era, ancient civilizations have already existed long before the Spanish colonization begun.

Located in Manila right beside the Luneta Park, the National Musuem is dedicated in educating every Filipino about the countries' rich history which spun more than a millennium. The museum  facade has a strong influenced of American architecture which are housed in two separate buildings: one for the artifacts and the other one for the paintings.

Some of the notable artifacts that can be found are the Spanish Jars, Old Canon (Lantakay), Native Weavings of Ifugao, Bangsamoro artficats (swords, ornaments etc.) and many more. The world famous "Spolarium" by Juan Luna is also on display together with the works of other world renowned painters and artist which includes Fernando Amorsolo, Noel Pascual and Damian Domindo to name a few.

The entrance is free every Sunday so the Pinoy Solo Traveler took the opportunity to visit the place.

How to Get There:

1.) From LRT Buendia ride a jeepney bound to Quiapo (w/ Luneta) on the signboard

2.) Tell the driver to drop you off in in Luneta, you can then just walk towards the National Musuem for 5mins.

Puting Buhangin (White Sand) Beach

Located in  Isla Polo, Pagbilao in the province of Quezon, about 170 kms. south of Manila, "Puting Buhangin Beach" has become one of the most popular yet unspoiled beach near Manila. It offers fine, white grain of sand and pristine clear water making it one of the most beautiful beach that is not yet fully commercialized. It's just too bad that when the Pinoy Solo Hiker went to the place it was high tide with powerful splurges of giant waves caused by "Hangin Habagat", so much for the spoiler.

What makes it unique though, is the other attraction known as "Kwebang Lampas". A cave located in the coastline of the beach. Puting Buhangin has live up to it's name which means "White Sand" in English. It is like a hidden treasure, situated in the island of "Isla Polo" it can be reach by boat or by land. Traveling by land offers a unique view of the countryside, terrain of rocky hills and Western Philippine Sea gives a prime experience of travel. Once you reach the jump off point; one will have to go trekking through bushes, mangroves, rocky cliffs and muddy stream just to reach the famed Puting Buhangin which is situated beside Pagbilao Power Plant. But in the end, it's all worth it.

How to Get There:

1.) Ride a bus bound for Lucena. Once in Lucena take a jeep bound for Pagbilao.

2.) In Pagbilao, you can then ride a jeep bound to "Polo". Tell the driver that you are going  to  Kwebang Lampas/ Puting Buhangin to drop you off in the Trike Terminal.

3.) Tell the trike driver to drop you off in the jump off point for Kwebang Lampas.

4.) In the jump off point you will have to take a boat to cross the other side of the river.

5.) Once on the otherside of the river, you can then trek your way to Puting Buhangin Beach also known to the locals as Lukang Beach.

Patar Beach in Bolinao

Bolinao is located in the western portion of Pangasinan on the northernmost part of Luzon. Bolinao Beach, particularly on the coast of Patar boast of with it's white cream sand, clear water and huge tidal waves suitable for complete summer getaway ideal for surfing, snorkeling and swimming.

Bolinao is not only limited to great beach, there are also there different places of interest that you can visit among which are: caves, falls, rock formation and of course the icon of Bolinao - the Patar Light House that stood more than a century of existence.

How to Get There:

1.) Take a bus bound to Bolinao (FiveStar), they have terminals in Cubao and Pasay.

2.) Once in Bolinao, you can then ride a trike bound to Patar Beach.

Matabungkay Beach

Located in the municipality of Lian, Batangas 120 kms. from Manila (2-3 hours depending on the traffic) facing South China Sea or what we call The Philippine Sea, Matabungkay Beach is known for white sand, pristine clear water- teaming up with various marine and aquatic life e.g. sea urchin, starfish, coral reef, sea weeds to name a few. Making it one of the most popular and accessible destination from Manila during summer.

How to Get There:

1.) Take a bus bound to Nasugbu, Batangas (DLTB), their terminal is in LRT Buendia.
2.) Tell the conductor to drop you off in Lian Poblacion.
3.) You can then ride a Jeepney bound to Matabungkay

Tagaytay Scenic View

One of the most popular summer destination in the Philippines, perhaps second to Baguio City. Tagaytay has an altitude of 2000ft above sea level. The scenic view overlooks Taal Lake and Taal Volcano Island which is viewable from several vantage points in the city.

Due to it's close proximity to Manila, it has become a popular vacation getaway not only during summer but all year round. Among the most popular attractions are: Picnic Grove (which includes: zip line, cable car, Taal Lake view, souvenir shops), Palace in the Sky, Mushroom Burger and the newly added Sky Ranch (there is an entry fee so I opted to just take pictures from afar).

Although Bulalo is originally from Batangas, you can still enjoy the world renowned Bulalo soup in Tagaytay with many restos to choose from.

How to Get There:

1.) Ride a bus bound to Tagaytay, tell the conductor to drop you off in Olivares Terminal (that's where the terminal of public tranport bound for Picnic Grove and People's Park are located).

2.) If you are planning to go to Sky Ranch tell the conductor to drop you off in Sky Ranch.

Rizal Park (Luneta) Walk In The Park

Rizal Park, also known as Luneta plays a pivotal part in Philippine history. A historical landmark that witnessed the execution of notable patriots e.g. GOMBURZA (Gomez, Burgos and Zamora) and of course Dr. Jose Rizal to which  the park was named.

It offers a serene and a relaxing place to unwind in the metro, Rizal Park will always be included in the top ten parks in the country. Inside the park you'll also find some places of interests like the Chinese Garden, The Orchidarium, Artists Haven, Heroes Biography, Statue of Lapu Lapu and of course the famous Rizal Monument, guarded by two Marines 24/7. Rizal Monument is also known as Kilometer Zero (the zero mark or the starting point of every kilometer post in Luzon). There are available Kalesa (horse drawn chariots) to give a tour inside the park.
